We are a learning community that generates experiences through recreational activities for children in Mexico. We focus on the local Mayan community in Tulum, with our students ranging in age from 5 - 12 years of age. Our mission is to empower and improve the quality of life of children in Tulum. We encourage inclusion, sociocultural exchange, raise of consciousness, cognitive and socio-emotional development.
We are inspired by two educational models as core of our programs:Science of Positive Psychology
Applied to children (Martin Seligman, Duckworth Peterson & Fredrickson) based on 7 character strengths: gratitude, curiosity, social intelligence, enthusiasm, optimism, self-regulation and perseverance. Positive psychology was defined by Seligman (1999) as the scientific study of positive experiences, positive individual traits, institutions that facilitate their development and programs that help improve the quality of life of individuals, while preventing or reducing the incidence of psychopathology.
It was also defined as the scientific study of human strengths and virtues, which allows adopting a more open perspective on human potential, its motivations and capabilities, also includes civic and institutional virtues that guide individuals to take responsibility for their community and promotes features to be a better city.
Based on 7 powers: perception, unity, attention, freedom, love, acceptance and intention. The children have developed skills to solve problems and have been able to find solutions between them and communicate verbally expressing their emotions. They use phrases like: "We have a problem and we will solve it" Through the Conscious Discipline program we propose that each individual be responsible for their own behavior, based on the latest brain research and invites volunteers to understand their own thoughts and emotions first, and then help children do the same.
It is important to keep in mind that one can not teach what one does not know. First you know yourself and then you know and teach the rest. This program emphasizes the integration of all domains of learning (social, emotional, physical, cultural and cognitive) into one, and thus know and understand the individuality of each child.
Our direct focus is childhood in a vulnerable state, since they are the ones with less opportunities and access to positive education whether at school or at home. However, since one of our core values is integration, all children from any social background, culture, race, religion, gender or skin color are welcome to participate.
Children are the bridge between past and future. They are the seeds of the present. By working with them, we can also indirectly reach their families, teenage siblings, schools and the rest of the community. We believe they have the potential to leave a trans-generational impact.
